A professor stood at the front of her class with an empty Mason jar and several other items, including some 2-inch and 3-inch rocks, pebbles, and sand. The professor called the classes attention to the Mason jar as she put the rocks into it and she asked the class if the jar was full, and the class replied that it was. The professor then poured the pebbles into the jar and asked the class if the jar was full, and the class replied that it was. The professor then poured the sand into the jar, and once again asked the class if the jar was full, and once again they replied that it was.
The professor went on to explain that the jar signified their lives and that rocks signified the important things in their lives, like family, health, and relationships. If you lost everything else, but still had the rocks in your life, your life would still be meaningful. The pebbles signified things like school or your career or other things that matter to you. The sand signified all the other less important things, like material possessions.
